Review of Defiance: The Game

I am sure that you have heard of this game, even seen it at your local video game store, and for one reason or another passed over it. You may not have heard of the SyFy TV show by the same name, but let me tell you this game is a hidden gem. However, paying anywhere over 20$ for this game would be an unwise move for your wallet. The game sets place in San Francisco Bay Area, (not St. Louise, as where the TV show is based,) where you are a Vault... I mean, ArkHunter working alongside Karl Von Bach, the owner, CEO, and cheif engineer of Von Bach Industries. Your job is to look for Vaults ... I mean, Ark pieces. Yea, seems familiar yet? The game itself is very straight forward. It is a 3rd Person Shooter with what seems like a lot to do at first, but you soon realize that it is a simple game. You shoot a lot, (and I mean A LOT,) of enemies while going from place to place, completing simple objectives. The game is a great pick up and play game. You won't be saying, "Just one more hour! The story is so interesting," because the story is kind of lacking in the, "gripping" department.

But what this game does do right is that it executes the simple formula quiet well. If you want a shooting gallery, then you've come to the right place. It doesn't get it scrambled up with the plot too much or any mini games. You want to shoot things, then go at it! And they do give you plenty to shoot at. Events ranging from simple locations where you have to shoot a lot of bad guys to shooting one major bad guy with a load of health. Luckily, the best thing about Defiance is that you are not alone in your lust for getting your gun off. There is still a thriving community of people that love this game, the TV show, and everything that comes with it. There are fewer assholes on the servers than one would think, so your experience will not be mucked up by some jerk off trying to show off to boost his ego. All in all, there are better games that do the formula better, but that isn't saying that this game does it badly. As a matter of fact, it does it decently well for being a MMORPG on the console. Yea, there are a few graphical problems such as not being able to see other character's custom made outfits or running into bad guys in your vehicle that haven't loaded yet and whatnot, but you still get what you want if you know that it is what you want. Definitely worth a pick up.

Pro

  • good entertaining gameplay for cheap bin price

  • plenty of weapons to shoot for any type of style that happens to fit your fancy

  • good community to play with

  • connects well with the tv series even though it is two different places

Con

  • graphically the game isn't the best

  • the gameplay does tend to get repetitive once you realize the pattern

  • it is strictly an online game, no single player at all
